TELL US ABOUT YOUR RHYTHM EXPERIENCE

What made you want to work here?
It’s funny how things work themselves out. The day I had my first interview at Rhythm, I had just verbally accepted an offer at another company.

But I’m so glad I decided to say yes to that initial interview, and after a few more conversations with Jim and Andrew, I knew Rhythm was where I needed to be. The communication felt easy and natural, there was so much honesty and transparency upfront, and I knew the learning opportunities I’d have here were going to be invaluable.

What does a day in your current role look like?
First things first: Coffee. Then, I review what needs to be done and tackle any high-priority issues that should be addressed immediately.

In general, I like to start my days with as much coding as possible.  I normally block out my mornings for development and try to schedule meetings towards the end of the day.

What do you enjoy most about being a Senior Software Engineer?
Two things make working at Rhythm great: The team itself, and our customers.

It’s very rare to find a CEO and a CTO that work in tandem like Andrew and Jim. It’s great to have them as leaders because they are always developing their skillsets, and I can look up to them and can learn from them.

Which Rhythm core value do you connect with the most?
Move at Internet Speed. I love getting to respond to our clients quickly and foster the childlike joy that we talk so much about here at Rhythm. Because we use Agile development methods, we can make rapid changes with a big impact in a really short amount of time.

How have you grown professionally since joining the team?
We use serverless architecture here at Rhythm, which is a relatively new mainstream technology. Because we’re a small company, I’ve had the opportunity to gain a lot of rich experience with in-demand skillsets and work on a variety of projects.

It’s really exciting to get in on the ground floor with new technologies and to see the market trending in the same direction.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?
I have to say, I’m proud of our Abstracts functionality. It was a brand new feature and one of my first big projects here at Rhythm. Even as I move forward and work on developing new functionality, Abstracts will always hold a special place in my heart

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOURSELF

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Nobody does it perfectly, ever.

For example, there is not a single right way to raise a kid or have a career. We will never do things flawlessly, but we have the choice to keep trying and be open to the opportunities for learning and growth that come from failing.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or pastimes?
While I love being active (CrossFit, soccer) and playing games with my family (Nerts), my ideal day looks like spending 7 hours in a hammock with a good book — probably Star Wars.

What’s something most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I used to be a member of a traveling drama group and put on plays in prisons.

If you could meet a fictional character in real life, who would it be and why?
I’d want to sit down and have a coffee with Han Solo. He has such a chill vibe, and I could ask him a bunch of questions about Star Wars… like how he felt when Luke kissed Leia.

If you won the lottery tomorrow, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Honestly, probably nothing. Eventually, I’d contact a lawyer and financial planner to help me invest it and set up an estate, but other than that, I’d just do what I normally do.

What song would be on the soundtrack of your life?
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas by Michael Bublé.
